Developing a Singer’s Mindset

As a vocal consultant, I’ve come across many talented singers who struggle to earn a steady income from their craft, often relying on other jobs to make ends meet.

Many of them have said something like: “Surely having a good singing voice is all that is needed!”

I often get emails and messages from singers asking me:

  • How do I become a professional singer?
  • Should I wait until I am 100 per cent confident and prepared to sing at a music competition show and in front of people?
  • it’s only luck
  • it is all about having the right contacts

In today’s digital age, there are so many people who want to be in the music industry and who have preconceptions of what it takes to be successful from all the shows and other media that flood our homes. So much of what we are being fed is misleading. With that, it’s essential to develop “A Singer’s Mindset” if you want to stand out and build a successful career.

The Hack Your Voice Series is an outcome of my mission to educate individuals who dare to follow their dreams. However, they might not have had the right resources. Check the lessons, and remember to write to me your stories and dreams.

Developing a Singer’s Mindset

So, what is a Singer’s Mindset, and why is it so important? Firstly, it’s all about having a passion for singing that can sustain you through the highs and lows of the industry. Secondly, it’s about developing a dedicated mindset that allows you to adapt to changes and pursue professional longevity. To help you develop your Singer’s Mindset, I share what I have learnt throughout many years in this industry.

Key Elements to Develop the Mindset

  1. Look at your past, present, and potential future, and throw yourself into the deep end by taking any opportunity to perform. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes – it’s how we learn and improve.
  2. Focus on finding a niche in the market where you can get attention, rather than trying to enter an oversaturated part of the industry. Music competition shows are a great way to test the waters and get public feedback. Find your unique brand and marketplace!
  3. Work on developing your stage presence, no matter what area of the industry you’re in. Face your Fears. With enough practice, your presence will naturally improve, and you’ll become more confident.
  4. Remember to promote yourself and your brand as an artist, but do so with integrity and respect. Don’t lose sight of who you are and what you stand for, even as you gain success.

A Personal Anecdote

Finally, let me share a true story about a talented singer I worked with. I believed this individual had the potential for a successful career, but it required focusing on a different marketplace and changing their target demographic. Unfortunately, they ignored my advice and ultimately struggled financially, leading to depression and a broken heart.
So, be honest with yourself about what you want – a hobby or a career? If you’re serious about pursuing a career in singing, remember to develop and maintain your Singer’s Mindset regularly.
